We are fortunate enough to be at a lodge in the Kalahari. We celebrated Anna's 9th birthday last night. (No, that's not the birthday party). We went out in Land Rovers today in two groups. One group (not this photographer) saw lions. Above, you see a rhino and her daughter, and two buffalo. The rhinos are being bred here -- it is one of the few places where they are. The one above has been a mother three times. The gestation period is about 15 months and the baby weighs 90 pounds at birth. They are extremely dumb, as witnessed by the fact they charge cars (our Land Rover has been gored twice), trucks, and with much less success, a train (the train derailed). The animals above are important to the ecosystem because they eat all the types of grass, not just the sweet grass favored by some animals. |
